Child Birth Defect Statistics In Alaska & Zofran Lawsuits

Zofran, an antiemetic for blocking Seratonin has been alleged as the cause of severe child birth defects, leading to several lawsuits being filed all over the United States. Alleged lawsuits state that Zofran caused an increased risk of child birth defects such as cleft palate and congenital heart defects.

Zofran, which also goes by the name Ondansetron, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991. However, the original intended usage of Zofran was for use in cancer and post-operative patients. The following symptoms were the intended usage of Zofran:

  • Preventing nausea and vomiting in patient’s undergoing cancer chemotherapy
  • Prevention of vomiting and nausea related with patients receiving radiotherapy
  • Preventing nausea and vomiting occurring post surgical operations

Zofran was never intended for the mitigation of morning sickness. But, this did not stop OB/GYNs from prescribing Zofran as a drug of choice for pregnant women in need of relief from severe morning sickness. It must be noted that the FDA never approved Zofran for the purposes of alleviating morning sickness in pregnant women.

What Are The Alaska Child Birth Defects Statistics?

The state of Alaska’s population is 736,732 as of the 2014 census estimate. Going by that figure, the estimated number of live births that resulted in a birth defect is 395. Nationally, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), estimates a one in every 33 live birth chance of a child born with a birth defect.

Birth defects are not uncommon and the causes of these defects range from genetic to defective drugs. Based on epidemiological studies, Zofran attorneys have assessed the state of  Alaska in order to gauge the number of possible claims that may exist.

The five populous cities in Alaska as follows:

From the estimated number above of 395 total potential birth defects, we estimate that 69 are a form of orofacial cleft and 326 are either a congenital heart defect such as atrial septal defect, (vsd) ventricular septal defect, bicuspid aortic stenosis, and supraventricular tachycardia. Using Alaska’s five most populous cities population figures, each city’s birth defect breakdown comes to the following statistics:

  • Fairbanks- 65 birth defects (approximately: 3 cleft palate and 62 congenital heart defects)

Side Effects & Birth Defects That Have Been Reported So Far

A 2012 CDC and Sloan Epidemiology Center Report, found that 9,000 mothers-to-be who took Zofran in the first trimester of their pregnancy, had double the risk of giving birth to a child with a cleft palate. Subsequently, cleft palate is one of the birth defects that has been listed in filed lawsuits. Other defects that have been filed include, but are not limited to, ASD or atrial septal defect, a baby born with webbed toes, kidney malformations, VSD or ventricular septal defect, supraventricular tachycardia, facial dysmorphia among others.
