In 2013 a group of Danish researchers examined the recorded births registered in Denmark using the years 1997-2010 as their timeline. The total number of pregnancies in this study was well over 900,000. Of those pregnancies they discovered that 60% of the babies that were exposed to Zofran’s active ingredient had a high chance of being born with congenital heart defects. A Swedish team carried out the same analysis on Swedish births between 1998-2012 where they also discovered that pregnant women prescribed Zofran for severe morning sickness risked a 62% chance of having a baby with congenital heart defects. Of that same analysis it was discovered that there was double the chance of having a baby with cardiac septal defect. Read more about these studies here.
The creators of the drug Zofran, GlaxoSmithKline, were first made aware of the negative effects the drug causes in pregnant women in the early 90s but did nothing to remedy this problem. Instead Zofran carried on being marketed as an off-label drug for the treatment of severe morning sickness in pregnant women; GSK even offered negotiated bribes to doctors to write scripts for their drug. As of now multiple lawsuits have been filed in America against the makers of this drug for the false advertisement of Zofran to pregnant women and the birth defects Zofran has caused over the years.
Birth Irregularities In West Virginia
There is a reported 3% chance of a baby being born with some sort of birth irregularity all over the United States. The reasons for these irregularities is not widely known nor agreed upon as they can occur due to inherited conditions all the way down to various medications the mother took while pregnant. West Virginia’s last recorded population number is 1,850,326. Of that figure the most populated cities had the following numbers:
- Charleston- 51,400 population
- Huntington- 49,138 population
- Parkersburg- 31,492 population
- Morgantown- 29,660 population
- Wheeling- 28,486 population
We used the data above and averaged the risk ratios documented in the Zofran specific clinical studies and we calculated that possibly 970 babies in West Virginia were delivered with some type of irregularity that was Zofran induced.
West Virginia Likely Numbers Of Orofacial Cleft & Hole In The Heart Defects
We calculated above that the likely number of possible Zofran related birth irregularities is 970, of that figure we further worked out how many were either a form of orofacial cleft and how many were a congenital heart defect or hole in the heart. The numbers were 225 were likely a variation of orofacial cleft and 745 were hole in the heart defects. For the five most inhabited city populations we broke down the likely numbers below:
- Charleston- 75 total likely birth defects: 5 were possibly orofacial cleft: 70 were possibly hole in the heart defects
- Huntington- 73 total likely birth defects: 5 were possibly orofacial cleft: 68 were possibly hole in the heart defects
- Parkersburg- 65 total likely birth defects: 3 were possibly orofacial cleft: 62 were possibly hole in the heart defects
- Morgantown- 64 total likely birth defects: 3 were possibly orofacial cleft: 61 were possibly hole in the heart defects
- Wheeling- 63 total likely birth defects: 2 were possibly orofacial cleft: 61 were possibly hole in the heart defects
Known Zofran Negative Effects
The CDC and Sloan Epidemiology researched the effects of Zofran on an unborn baby and discovered that the presence of Zofran in the early fetal development stages left the baby exposed to 2.37 chances of being born with a cleft palate. Read about the research here.
Furthermore, lawsuits have been filed that have seen the complainants who took Zofran in the early stages of pregnancy, say they were not warned about any possible dangers associated with Zofran, and eventually delivered their babies with serious birth irregularities. Some of the defects listed are, but not at all limited:
- bicuspid aortic stenosis
- supraventricular tachycardia
- heart murmur
- low set ears
- renal malformations
- cleft palate
