Virginia Child Birth Defect Statistics & Zofran Lawsuits

Zofran is a drug that was specifically formulated for the treatment of nausea and vomiting (NVM) in cancer patients going through chemo and radiation therapy, as well as for post operative patients suffering from nausea. However, Zofran has been known to be prescribed by doctors to pregnant women suffering from intense NVM during pregnancy. These expectant moms have been taking this drug in the most crucial stages of fetal development thereby exposing their babies to the possibility of being born with deformities.

Although Zofran was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1991 for the above mentioned use, the drug was never approved for use in pregnant women. Subsequently, there have been several studies that have been conducted that have revealed the dangerous side effects Zofran poses to healthy infant development. One of those studies was The Danielsson Study which looked at births in Sweden from 1998-2012 and discovered that the chances of an infant being born with a hole in the heart doubled, and the likelihood of other heart related abnormalities shot up to 62% after the expectant mom took Zofran in the early stages of her pregnancy. There have been numerous lawsuits that have been brought to court all over the United States with complaints that Zofran caused serious child birth abnormalities.

As already mentioned, numerous studies have been carried out that have linked Zofran with negative side effects that caused birth deformities. Some of the stated and documented deformities have been congenital heart defects and cleft palate.
